Growth mindset leadership

What is it?

If you have a GROWTH mindset, you believe your abilities and talents can be developed. Change is possible. By contrast, a FIXED mindset says talent / abilities are a fixed trait. Or another way, those with a growth mindset consider themselves “works in progress.”

Why does it matter?

Our internal stories affect our behaviours. Viewing life from a GROWTH vs FIXED mindset affects how we deal with these 5 areas:

1. Challenges - embrace them VS avoid them
2. Obstacles - persist VS give up
3. Effort - worth it VS there's no point
4. Feedback - learn from it VS ignore it
5. Others' success - feel inspired VS feel threatened

Think most of us working in hospitality would say running restaurants involves a lot of the 5 things above!

What can we do about it?

One way to develop a growth mindset is to become more aware of the language we use. Watch out for labels such as I am/ I am not an x person , and generalisations I’ll never I’m totally I’m always. And try playing around with the word yet…

I’m no good at this...yet
I’m not confident… yet
I haven’t got the guts to do this…yet
I don’t know anything about this…yet

The language we use shapes our experience of the world. If you are interested in leadership coaching to GROW your talents and abilities I am here for you!
